Summary

An interview with Kathleen Simiyu from Mozilla ---- She talks about the Common Voice initiative under Mozilla. ---- My journey in the tech industry started when I enrolled in Science and Computer studies at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology ---- Mozilla Common Voice is an initiative to help teach machines how real people speak. It is a crowdsourcing project meant to create a free database for speech recognition software. We have other developers using the same concept but in different languages. We are working with various organizations like Pwani University. We work hand in hand with students learning Swahili. We are working with Hekaya Art Initiative as well. We have grant funding from Mozilla which supports various organizations in Africa. In DRC, an organization under the funding is developing equipment aimed at supporting women to access legal information, mostly in land ownership. The tech industry is flooded by mostly men. I urge women to venture more into the industry and not participate as only users.
